India's top order in crisis: Shubman Gill's injury adds to Rohit Sharma's doubt

The Indian team’s preparations for the highly anticipated Test series against Australia have been dealt a major blow with Shubman Gill becoming a doubt for the first Test, starting next Friday at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Gill, who has been in good form and has been batting at No. 3, sustained a blow to his left hand on Day 2 of India's intra-squad match simulation at the WACA Ground.

According to reports from ESPNcricinfo, Gill was fielding in the slips when he was struck on his left hand, forcing him to walk off the field without returning. The nature and extent of the injury remain unclear, but it raises concerns over his participation in the opening Test match. The batter had been one of the potential candidates to replace Rohit Sharma at the top of the order, following the Indian skipper’s uncertainty over his availability.

Rohit Sharma’s availability for the match is already in question, as the Indian captain is yet to arrive in Australia following the birth of his second child. He had informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that his wife, Ritika Sajdeh, was due to give birth close to the series opener, which could keep him from being available for the first Test.

If both Gill and Rohit miss the game in Perth, India may have to rely on KL Rahul and Abhimanyu Easwaran to open the batting, with the latter coming off an unimpressive showing in the India A vs Australia A series. Despite the uncertainty, Gill had been in solid form during the intra-squad match, scoring 28 in the first innings and an unbeaten 42 in his second attempt.

As India heads into the opening Test, the absence of two key top-order batters could severely impact their plans, adding extra pressure to the team’s batting lineup. Despite the injury, Gill’s determination and form in recent outings give hope for a quick recovery, though the final call on his fitness remains pending.

With just six days left before the Test begins, all eyes will be on the Indian team management’s updates regarding both Gill and Rohit’s availability. The uncertainty surrounding the top order leaves the team’s combination for the first match against Australia up in the air.
