52-year-old killed in hit-and-run accident in Newtown, Bengal; Driver still at large

A 52-year-old man, Santosh Brahma, was killed in a hit-and-run accident in the Newtown area of Kolkata on Thursday morning. Brahma, a resident of Anand Pally in Newtown, had stepped out of his home to buy tea when he was struck by a speeding vehicle. The impact caused him to fall onto the road, and the car, which was driving at high speed, fled the scene immediately after the collision. Brahma was later rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident, focusing on identifying the vehicle and the driver responsible. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from cameras installed in the area to track down the car involved in the accident. The vehicle, described as a speeding car, remains unidentified, and the driver is currently at large. Police are actively working to gather additional details, including possible eyewitness accounts, to aid in their search.

This incident follows a series of similar accidents across West Bengal, where pedestrians have been injured or killed due to reckless driving. In recent weeks, such accidents have involved both pedestrians and schoolchildren in high-traffic areas. Police and local authorities have increased their monitoring of busy roads and have emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to curb the growing number of accidents.

Authorities have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and they are urging anyone with relevant information, including footage from private or public cameras, to come forward. The police are committed to resolving the case as quickly as possible and have assured the public that the driver responsible will be apprehended.
