Indian Navy leads Sea Vigil exercise, simulate sabotage defense at Kolkata GRSE

On 21 November 2024, India showcased its formidable coastal defense capabilities through the major exercise Sea Vigil 24, held at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) facility in Kolkata. This high-intensity operation was designed to simulate a sabotage attempt by non-state actors, testing the readiness and coordination of multiple security agencies in safeguarding critical maritime infrastructure.

The exercise was spearheaded by the Indian Navy, ensuring seamless collaboration among all participating stakeholders, including the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the National Security Guard (NSG), and the GRSE management. The primary objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of joint operations in countering sophisticated threats aimed at strategic assets.

The operation began with the deployment of CISF Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs), who acted as the first responders. These teams swiftly mobilized to secure the GRSE facility, establish a robust perimeter, and prevent any unauthorized access or movement within the site. Their prompt action was crucial in maintaining control over the situation and mitigating potential threats.

To further reinforce the defense, the Indian Navy introduced Fast Interceptor Crafts (FIC), which implemented a stringent maritime blockade. This measure was instrumental in eliminating any seaborne escape routes or avenues for reinforcement, ensuring that the simulated saboteurs could neither flee nor receive external support. The naval forces' strategic deployment demonstrated their pivotal role in maritime security operations.

With the perimeter secured and maritime threats neutralized, the NSG initiated a precision counter-assault to eliminate the simulated threats. Utilizing advanced tactical strategies, the NSG teams conducted surgical strikes that neutralized the threats with minimal collateral impact, ensuring the safety of both the naval assets and the facility. Their operations highlighted the NSG's unparalleled expertise in handling high-stakes scenarios.

The GRSE management played an indispensable role by providing comprehensive site intelligence, detailed technical layouts, and logistical support. This collaboration enabled the security forces to execute informed and coordinated tactical maneuvers, enhancing the overall effectiveness of the exercise.
