Governor Bose invites CM Mamata to Raj Bhawan, sends sweets

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose celebrated the completion of two years in office on Friday, marking the occasion with a gesture aimed at easing tensions with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The Raj Bhavan sent a package containing sweets and fruits to the Chief Minister, accompanied by a letter from the Governor reflecting on his tenure. In response, Mamata Banerjee sent a similar package of sweets to the Governor on Saturday. These exchanges are seen as a step towards improving the relationship between the two top officials, which had been marked by friction in recent times.

In his letter, Governor Bose provided a detailed account of his experience in office, highlighting the early years of cooperation with the state government. "In my first year, the relationship with the state government was friendly," the Governor wrote. However, he acknowledged that the second year saw some challenges. He noted that there had been differences between the Raj Bhavan and the state government, which had led to a certain level of discord. Despite these disagreements, Governor Bose expressed his commitment to work closely with the state government in the third year of his tenure. "In the third year, I am eager to work hand-in-hand with the state government towards the development of West Bengal," the letter concluded.

The exchange of sweets comes after a period of public tension between the Governor and Chief Minister. Earlier this year, Mamata Banerjee had expressed concerns over her safety at the Raj Bhavan following allegations of sexual harassment by a female employee of the Raj Bhavan. This incident led to the Chief Minister openly stating that she would not visit the Raj Bhavan, citing concerns about the safety of women there. Instead, she opted to meet the Governor in public spaces. On August 15, when invited to a customary tea meeting at the Raj Bhavan, Mamata Banerjee attended but left without drinking the tea, signaling her dissatisfaction with the institution. Since then, she has not visited Raj Bhavan or met the Governor in person.

To mark his second anniversary, Governor Bose unveiled a statue of himself at the Raj Bhavan. The statue was created under the guidance of the Indian Museum and was installed as part of the celebrations. Governor Bose personally inaugurated the statue, which was one of the key events of the day. In addition, he participated in a children's drawing workshop, where he also contributed by creating his own artwork. The Governor’s office organized a series of cultural events throughout the day, including a performance at the Raj Bhavan auditorium in the evening.
