Jammu and Kashmir hit by 5.8 magnitude earthquake, no casualties reported

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake shook Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday afternoon, with tremors reported across the Kashmir Valley. Officials confirmed that no casualties or property damage had been reported so far.

The earthquake, recorded at 4:19 pm, originated in Afghanistan. The epicentre was located at a latitude of 36.49°N and longitude of 71.27°E, at a depth of 165 kilometers. This deep-seated tremor is less likely to cause extensive surface damage, which aligns with the current reports of minimal disruption.

Residents in Srinagar and other parts of the valley felt mild to moderate tremors, causing momentary panic as people rushed out of buildings. However, no significant impact on infrastructure or lives has been reported. “We’ve received no reports of casualties or structural damage yet,” said a senior disaster management official.

The earthquake’s epicenter in the mountainous regions of Afghanistan highlights the region’s geological vulnerability, as it sits along the Hindu Kush seismic belt. This area is known for frequent and intense seismic activity, often felt in neighboring regions, including northern India and Pakistan.

Earthquakes of similar magnitude have occurred in the past, with varying levels of impact. Local authorities in Jammu and Kashmir remain on high alert for potential aftershocks. Disaster management teams are prepared to respond should any unforeseen damage or secondary events occur.

Meanwhile, residents have been advised to stay vigilant and follow safety protocols in case of aftershocks, though the likelihood of severe tremors following this event is low.
