Tensions flared in Parliament on Thursday, December 19, as BJP MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi alleged that Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi pushed an MP during a confrontation, leading to Sarangi sustaining injuries. The incident occurred amidst a heated debate between the ruling BJP and the Opposition over issues related to the Ambedkar row.
Sarangi, recounting the incident, said, “Rahul Gandhi pushed an MP who fell on me after which I fell down... I was standing near the stairs when Rahul Gandhi came and pushed an MP who then fell on me.” The BJP MP reportedly sustained minor injuries in the scuffle.
Responding to the allegations, Rahul Gandhi refuted the claims, asserting that he was attempting to enter Parliament when BJP MPs obstructed him. “This might be on your camera. I was trying to go inside through the Parliament entrance. BJP MPs were trying to stop me, push me, and threaten me. So this happened,” Gandhi said.
The confrontation reportedly extended to Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, who was also allegedly obstructed. Gandhi added, “Yes, this has happened (Kharge being pushed). But we do not get affected by jostling. The central issue is that they are attacking the Constitution and insulting the memory of Ambedkar ji.”
The incident unfolded against the backdrop of growing tensions between the BJP and the Opposition over constitutional issues and alleged insults to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s legacy. BJP leaders have demanded an apology from Gandhi, accusing him of resorting to physical aggression.
As the winter session of Parliament continues, the escalating confrontations have raised concerns about the decorum and functioning of the legislative body.
