Police have arrested a militant from Canning, raising security concerns in the area. The arrested individual, identified as Javed Munshi, is a resident of Chanpura, Srinagar. According to the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Javed is a member of the banned militant group Tehreek-e-Mujahideen. He was taken into custody on Saturday night following a police raid on a house in the Canning Hospital intersection area.
The police operation took place at a location known as Gulshal House, where they apprehended Javed from a house owned by a man referred to as Jamaibabu. Investigators suggest that Javed had been residing in the area for several days, potentially planning to flee to Bangladesh. However, the circumstances surrounding his presence in Canning and the exact details of his activities remain unclear, as both Javed and his family have refrained from speaking to the authorities or the media.
Javed was brought before the Alipore Court, where he was produced for a transit remand. The authorities are likely to take him to Jammu and Kashmir for further interrogation. Although the police have not yet released comprehensive details, they maintain that his arrest is significant in the ongoing efforts to dismantle militant networks operating in the region.
Family members of Javed, particularly those associated with Jamaibabu’s house, have largely remained silent, declining to comment on the incident. This has further fueled speculation about the motives behind Javed's presence in Bengal and his potential escape route.
The arrest has drawn attention to the increasing concerns about militancy and cross-border infiltration in Bengal, especially near the Bangladesh border. Authorities are on high alert, as militants attempting to cross into Bangladesh could raise tensions in the border areas.
Police sources also suggest that this arrest may be part of a broader crackdown on Tehreek-e-Mujahideen militants who have been allegedly active in the region. The security forces are tightening their surveillance and increasing operations to curb such infiltration attempts.
