Human skull and bones found in fridge at abandoned house in Kochi

Police in Kochi, Kerala, uncovered human remains, including a skull and bones, inside a refrigerator at an abandoned house in Chottanikkara. The house, located on a 14-acre plot near the Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple, had been locked and uninhabited for 15-20 years. The search was prompted by complaints from local residents, who reported that the property had become a hideout for anti-social elements. During the police inspection, the remains were found packed in three separate covers inside a non-functional refrigerator.

The refrigerator, which had no electricity supply and lacked a compressor, had been out of use for years. The skull and bones were discovered in an advanced state of decomposition. The police confirmed that the remains were human but stated that further forensic examination would be required to determine their age, identity, and how long they had been inside the fridge. A forensic examination is scheduled for Tuesday, and authorities are expecting additional findings.

The house is owned by Philip John, a 74-year-old medical practitioner from Vyttila, Ernakulam. The property had been left abandoned for over two decades, with no one residing there during this time. John’s children are reported to live abroad, and the house has remained locked throughout the years. The property had recently raised concerns from local residents, leading to a complaint from the area panchayat about its use by anti-social elements.

Following the discovery, the police have initiated a formal investigation and registered a case. Authorities are currently questioning the owner of the property, Philip John, who is expected to cooperate with the ongoing inquiry. As part of the investigation, police are working to gather more information about the identity of the remains and how they came to be stored in the abandoned refrigerator. The police have not disclosed further details at this time.

The house had been neglected and was reported to have remained locked for the past 15-20 years, with no indications of activity. The police are investigating whether the property had been used by any individuals in connection with illegal activities during its period of abandonment. Authorities are examining all possible angles, and forensic results are expected to provide more insight into the identity of the remains and the circumstances surrounding the case.
