Former BJP Member of Parliament (MP) Arjun Singh and his son, BJP Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Pawan Singh, have been summoned by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in relation to an ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities and illegal activities concerning the 2020 Bhatpara Municipality tenders. The Barrackpore Police Commissionerate has issued a notice to Arjun Singh, directing him to appear before the authorities on Wednesday for questioning in connection with charges related to corruption and illegal construction. Arjun Singh has previously been summoned by both the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate and CID but has either evaded or avoided questioning on certain occasions.
Arjun Singh, who was the Chairman of Bhatpara Municipality at the time of the alleged fraud, is being investigated for his alleged role in awarding tenders for municipal construction projects, as well as approval of illegal construction activities during his tenure. The charges suggest that improper tendering processes and financial discrepancies may have occurred under his leadership. The CID’s investigation is focused on determining the scale of the fraud and identifying individuals involved in these illegal activities.
In addition to Arjun Singh, his son Pawan Singh, a BJP MLA from Bhatpara, has also been summoned by the CID in connection with a separate business-related case. The investigation into Pawan Singh involves allegations of financial misconduct tied to his business dealings. CID authorities have asked Pawan Singh to appear for questioning as part of their probe into the matter. Although he has stated he will cooperate with the investigation, Pawan Singh’s legal team maintains that the summons are part of a broader political effort to target the family.
The legal actions against Arjun Singh and Pawan Singh stem from their alleged involvement in the tendering process during Arjun Singh’s time as Bhatpara Municipality Chairman, particularly around alleged kickbacks and unlawful construction permits. These investigations are linked to the broader inquiry into corruption in municipal governance and the approval of tenders for construction projects, which allegedly led to substantial financial gains for some individuals while bypassing legal norms.
Despite multiple legal summons and investigations over the years, neither Arjun Singh nor Pawan Singh has been formally charged. The CID is continuing to gather evidence to determine whether any illegal financial activities took place during the award of tenders or construction permits. As the investigation continues, authorities are focusing on both the financial aspects of the case as well as the involvement of other individuals in Bhatpara Municipality who may have been complicit in the alleged fraud.
