Priyanka Gandhi slams Ramesh Bidhuri's 'cheeks' remark as

Ramesh Bidhuri, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Kalkaji constituency in the Delhi Assembly elections, triggered a controversy last week with his comment about Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. During a campaign event, Bidhuri reportedly stated that if elected, he would make the roads in Kalkaji as smooth as Priyanka Gandhi’s cheeks. The comment quickly drew strong criticism from opposition leaders, particularly from Congress, who described it as sexist and inappropriate.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, responding to the remark on Wednesday after attending a joint parliamentary committee meeting, called Bidhuri’s statement "ridiculous" and stressed that such remarks were unnecessary. She pointed out that while Bidhuri had made comments about her, he had not mentioned anything about his own cheeks. Gandhi also urged that the focus of the Delhi Assembly election should be on more significant issues that affect the public, rather than on trivial matters. “Elections are taking place in Delhi. Important issues should be discussed,” she said.

The controversy surrounding Bidhuri's remarks sparked additional backlash from Congress leaders. Supriya Shrinate, a prominent Congress spokesperson, took to social media to condemn the remark, calling it indicative of a "disgusting mentality" towards women. Alka Lamba, the president of the Mahila Congress, also criticized the BJP leader for his "indecent language," accusing him of repeatedly insulting women in his political discourse.

Following the widespread criticism, Ramesh Bidhuri issued an apology for his comment, expressing regret for any offense caused. In his apology, he clarified that he did not intend to hurt anyone with his words. He also pointed out that similar comments had been made by other political figures, referring specifically to RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav, who had previously made remarks about BJP MP Hema Malini. Despite the apology, the remark remained a point of contention, with many questioning whether such language should be part of public discourse, especially during an election campaign.

The controversy has become a key talking point in the context of the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. With critical issues such as air pollution, healthcare, infrastructure development, and women’s safety dominating the electoral discussions, political leaders from various parties, including Congress, have called for the election debate to remain focused on these pressing concerns. The incident has added to the ongoing discourse about the tone of political campaigning in India, especially in the lead-up to state elections like those in Delhi.
