The Kolkata High Court has granted permission for a protest march organized by a BJP-affiliated group, aimed at opposing the alleged illegal occupation of land at Alipore Zoo. The group has raised concerns about the proposed relocation of the zoo’s animal hospital and aquarium to make way for commercial activities. The protest, which is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, January 9, will begin at 12 pm and conclude by 3 pm. The High Court has approved a limit of 1,000 participants for the event.
The march will start from Rabindra Sadan Metro station and proceed through PTSS Mode, ultimately heading toward Alipore Zoo. The protestors are primarily concerned that the relocation of the animal hospital and aquarium will pave the way for private business ventures, compromising the public services the zoo currently provides. The animal hospital at the zoo treats a variety of wildlife species, and the aquarium showcases numerous types of aquatic life, both of which are considered important educational and conservation resources.
The decision to approve the march follows a request for permission from the Kolkata Police, which was initially denied. The group then turned to the Kolkata High Court, which granted them permission to hold the protest with conditions, including the specified duration of the march and the maximum number of participants. The court also directed the police to monitor the event closely to ensure it remains peaceful and orderly.
Political leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, are expected to participate in the protest. The march will highlight concerns over the commercialization of public spaces, particularly in areas with environmental or educational significance. The police have been tasked with ensuring security during the demonstration, with special attention given to maintaining public order and preventing any disruptions.
