A serious incident of harassment near Dumdum Airport Gate 1 on Wednesday evening escalated into violence, resulting in three arrests. The event centers around a paan shop located near a women’s restroom in the Ramkrishna Road area, used by women working in the nearby market. The restroom is situated behind the shop, and it has been reported that a group of young men, allegedly led by Shyam Jaiswal, gathered regularly outside the shop. Locals have accused the group of making indecent remarks toward women and peeking inside the restroom. There were also claims that the group used cigarette burns to create holes in the plastic door of the restroom to watch inside.
The situation took a violent turn when Arup Kayal, a local resident, confronted the group about their behavior. According to the report, in response to the protest, Jaiswal and his associates attacked Kayal, hitting him on the head and causing injuries. The altercation has drawn significant attention from local residents, who had been voicing concerns about the group's behavior for a long time.
Following the assault, a formal complaint was filed at the Dumdum police station, and an FIR was registered. The police acted quickly, arresting three individuals connected to the attack. Law enforcement has confirmed that they are continuing the investigation, with statements being taken from the involved parties. Local women have expressed relief over the swift action taken by the authorities, but they are also calling for increased security measures around public spaces, especially those frequented by women.
