Tensions have escalated in the Vaishnabnagar police station area of Malda, West Bengal, as the Border Security Force (BSF) has been obstructed by the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) while attempting to install barbed wire along the India-Bangladesh border. The conflict has been ongoing for the past three days, with BGB reportedly hindering the installation of the fence on Indian land, despite it being placed within India’s territorial boundary.
The absence of barbed wire in a 100-meter stretch of the border has raised security concerns among local residents. They claim that this gap has allowed individuals from Bangladesh to cross into India undetected, evading BSF surveillance. According to local sources, this has led to a rise in thefts, including the theft of crops, and illegal infiltration into India. There have also been reports of illegal migrants, including Rohingyas, attempting to cross the border into India. In the absence of effective fencing, residents have expressed concerns over the increasing incidents of cross-border crimes.
To address the escalating tensions, a high-level meeting was held yesterday evening in Mohadipur between BSF and BGB officials. The meeting aimed to resolve the dispute and discuss potential solutions to enhance security and prevent illegal activities along the border. The installation of barbed wire is being seen as an important step to prevent such issues. Both sides are expected to continue discussions in the coming days to reach a resolution and improve the security situation along the border.
