Farmer protesting at Shambu border dies after consuming poison

A 55-year-old farmer protesting at the Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana has died after allegedly attempting suicide, as confirmed by authorities at Patiala's Rajindra hospital. This marks the second suicide at the protest site within three weeks, underscoring the growing despair among farmers demanding minimum support price (MSP) guarantees from the Centre.

The deceased farmer, a resident of Pahuwind village in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district, took the drastic step amidst the ongoing agitation led by SKM (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha. Protesters have been stationed at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points since February 13, 2024, after their march to Delhi was blocked by security forces.

Farmer leader Tejvir Singh revealed that the farmer was disheartened by the government’s inaction despite months of protests. “He was deeply upset with the Centre for not addressing the farmers' issues. This extreme step reflects the growing hopelessness among us,” Singh said.

This incident follows the December 18 suicide of another farmer at the Shambhu border, reportedly distressed over the deteriorating health of 70-year-old Jagjit Singh Dallewal. Dallewal has been on a fast-unto-death at the Khanauri border since November 26, pressing for action on the farmers' demands.

On Monday, a Supreme Court-appointed High-Powered Committee visited Dallewal but failed to make headway, as the farmer leader refused medical assistance. Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene, stressing that a dialogue could defuse the tense situation and ease hardships faced by common people due to the border closures.

Farmer leaders have warned that the Centre may lose control of the situation if such incidents continue. Abhimanyu Kohar, a prominent protest leader, stated, “If anything happens to Dallewal ji, the situation might spiral out of the government’s hands.”
