Arabul Islam faces attempted murder charges after TMC suspension, Bhangar incident

Arabul Islam, the former influential leader of Bhangar, has been suspended by the Trinamool Congress, and new legal charges have been filed against him. The charges, which include attempted murder, were filed by Ahshan Mollah, a leader from the party and Forest and Land Affairs In-charge of Bhangar 1 Block. Mollah's complaint alleges that on Thursday, during his visit to the Bhangar 2 BDO office for land registry-related work, he was attacked by Arabul Islam’s associates, including his son Hakimul Islam. The complaint was formally lodged at the Bijayganj police station.

The police registered a case against Arabul Islam, Hakimul Islam, and 8 others. The charges include attempted murder, vandalism, and obstruction of government work. According to Mollah, the incident occurred when he was at the BDO office and was allegedly assaulted by the group led by Arabul and his son. One individual has already been arrested in connection with the attack. Police have initiated further investigation into the matter, and additional arrests are anticipated as the probe continues.

Arabul Islam’s suspension from the Trinamool Congress came immediately after the charges were filed. This suspension follows a history of previous temporary suspensions by the party, with Arabul being reinstated after each incident. The current suspension is significant, as it follows not just the legal troubles but also escalating tensions within the party. Trinamool Congress had taken disciplinary action against several senior members, and Arabul’s case adds to the growing list of leaders facing internal party challenges.

Following the filing of charges, police investigations are ongoing, and the case is being treated with urgency. Arabul and his son, Hakimul Islam, have not publicly responded to the charges or the suspension. Meanwhile, sources report that several of Arabul’s supporters are considering shifting their allegiance. Some have reportedly begun reaching out to rival factions, including those associated with Shaukat Mollah, a former MLA from Canning East. The political landscape in Bhangar is in flux, with these developments signaling potential shifts in local political allegiances.
