Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was attacked in his Bandra residence in Mumbai on the early morning of January 17. The intruder, described as a man in his 40s, entered the actor's apartment and assaulted him with a knife. During the confrontation, Khan was stabbed six times, including a serious wound near his spine. According to reports, the assailant’s primary motive appeared to be robbery, as he demanded ₹1 crore in ransom from Khan’s son’s nanny but left the room’s valuables untouched. The incident occurred around 3 a.m., and Khan, who was conscious during the attack, confronted the intruder to protect his family.
Khan was swiftly rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent a five-hour surgery to treat his stab wounds. Doctors reported that Khan sustained deep injuries, one of which was near his spine. A broken piece of the knife had also lodged in his body, which was later removed during the surgery. The attending medical team explained that had the knife penetrated just 2 mm deeper, it could have caused major spinal damage. Following the surgery, Khan was moved from the ICU to a general ward, and doctors confirmed that he was in stable condition. His recovery is progressing well, and he is expected to be discharged within 2-3 days.
Mumbai Police have been investigating the case and have detained two suspects in connection with the attack. The first suspect was apprehended in Madhya Pradesh, and the second was detained in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district. The Chhattisgarh suspect was intercepted aboard the Gyaneshwari Express train, based on information provided by Mumbai Police. Both suspects are currently being questioned to determine their involvement in the crime. CCTV footage from various locations has been vital in tracking the suspects. One clip from Khan's apartment shows the assailant climbing the stairs to the 12th-floor apartment, while another video, obtained from a mobile shop in Dadar, shows the suspect buying earphones after the attack.
According to the shop owner, the suspect purchased earphones for ₹50, handing over ₹100, and was later caught on CCTV. Police have also analyzed footage from railway stations, as they suspect the attacker may have used public transportation to flee after the incident. The investigation has led authorities to believe that the assailant entered Khan’s apartment through the staircase and possibly left using the train system to escape the city. Over 15 people, including Khan’s household staff and domestic workers, have been questioned as part of the ongoing probe.
The motive behind the attack remains under investigation, though authorities have ruled out the involvement of a gang. Police sources stated that while the intruder had demanded ₹1 crore, the attack appears to have been a targeted attempt to extort money rather than a random act of violence. Investigators are working to confirm the identity of the suspects and the full extent of their involvement in the crime.
