Starting January 23, the Howrah Maidan to Esplanade route on Green Line 2 will see an increase in metro services. The number of daily trains operating between these two stations, which had been limited to 114 due to ongoing tunnel construction, will now rise to 130. This increase follows the completion of the tunnel work, allowing metro services to resume at full capacity.
The tunnel work had caused a disruption in the metro services, preventing trains from running through a significant stretch of the route. With the completion of construction and the restoration of full tunnel access, both tunnels are now operational, making it possible to increase the number of metro trains running between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade. As a result, the number of services is being enhanced to accommodate rising commuter demand.
Under the new timetable, metro trains will run every 12 minutes during peak hours, from 9 AM to 11 AM and 5 PM to 8 PM, Monday through Saturday. Outside of peak hours, trains will be available every 15 minutes. The first metro from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade will depart at 7 AM, with the last train departing at 9:45 PM. The same schedule applies for metro services in the reverse direction, from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan.
On Sundays, the metro service will be expanded further, with the number of trains increasing from 46 to 62. These trains will operate at 15-minute intervals, with the first train departing at 2:15 PM and the last train leaving at 9:45 PM.
Additionally, the East-West metro route will undergo signal modernization in February. As part of this work, services between Sealdah and Salt Lake will be suspended in two phases: from February 13 to 16 and again from February 22 to 25. During these periods, passengers will be unable to use the East-West metro line for travel between these two stations.
