PM Modi expresses condolences after deadly stampede at Maha Kumbh, assures full support

A deadly stampede occurred at the Maha Kumbh Mela during the 'Shahi Snan' on Mauni Amavasya in Prayagraj, resulting in fatalities and injuries. The incident took place early Wednesday morning near the Triveni Sangam, where millions of devotees had gathered to take a holy dip. As the crowd surged toward the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers, police barricades were breached, causing a crush of people. Several individuals were trampled, and chaos ensued as the crowd spilled over.

At least 30 bodies were reported to have been brought to the hospital, with over 40 women among the injured. Authorities confirmed that the injured were rushed to a central hospital set up near the Mela grounds. Ambulances, police vehicles, and medical teams were swiftly deployed to provide aid. Relatives of the victims and injured gathered at the hospital, where medical personnel were working to treat the wounded.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences in a statement, offering deep sympathy to the victims’ families. He also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. Modi confirmed he had been in communication with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and assured him of full support from the central government to address the situation. The Prime Minister further extended his heartfelt condolences to the devotees who lost their loved ones.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, draws millions of pilgrims each year. This year, the event holds additional significance due to the rare celestial alignment known as 'Triveni Yog,' which occurs once every 144 years. The Amrit Snan during Mauni Amavasya is regarded as one of the most important rituals of the Mela, with expectations of over 10 crore pilgrims attending. Devotees believe that taking a dip at the Triveni Sangam during this time cleanses their sins and offers spiritual liberation.

Following the stampede, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath assured the public that the situation was under control. Adityanath advised devotees to take the holy dip at the nearest ghats, especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and individuals with health conditions like asthma. He emphasized that all ghats along the Ganga are sacred and provide the same spiritual merit as the Sangam. Authorities have deployed additional forces to ensure crowd control and safety.

In response to the incident, Akharas (religious groups) participating in the Kumbh Mela decided to cancel their processions and postponed their participation in the holy dip at Triveni Sangam. The Mela, which started on January 13, continues until February 26, and authorities are increasing efforts to manage crowd movements, with extra police personnel and security measures in place. Local officials have urged pilgrims to remain cautious and adhere to safety guidelines to prevent further accidents during the remainder of the Mela.
