Singh stated that during the Foreign Secretary’s visit to Bangladesh on December 9, India reiterated its expectations regarding the protection of Hindus and other minorities. He added that the Government of Bangladesh, in a press briefing on December 10, confirmed the arrest of 70 people in 88 cases related to attacks on minorities. Investigations by Bangladesh police verified 1,254 incidents of violence against minorities.
Since August 5, a large number of people from minority communities in Bangladesh have reportedly attempted to enter India, citing security concerns. The High Commission of India in Dhaka has been monitoring developments and maintaining communication with Bangladesh authorities. The Indian government has stated that the primary responsibility for the safety of all citizens, including minorities, lies with the Government of Bangladesh.
Disputes have also emerged along the Indo-Bangladesh border, particularly over infrastructure projects undertaken by India that had received prior approval under the previous Bangladesh administration. Changes in the political landscape have led to differences over ongoing projects and border security matters.
In August 2024, a caretaker government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took charge in Bangladesh. Since then, discussions between the two countries have continued on multiple bilateral issues, including security, border management, and minority protection. Authorities on both sides have engaged in dialogue to address concerns and maintain cooperation on regional security matters.
