Mamata awards 50 lakhs to female footballers of East Bengal team
The Supreme Court has allowed the Calcutta High Court to hear the case of RG Kar Medical College student Abhaya’s rape and murder, following a petition by her parents demanding a CBI investigation. The case will be heard on Monday by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh’s bench. The parents had initially approached the Calcutta High Court on Thursday, but Justice Ghosh declined to proceed, stating that a related matter was pending before the Supreme Court. This led the family to seek intervention from the apex court.
Senior advocate Karuna Nundy, representing Abhaya’s parents, argued before the Supreme Court that a hearing in the Calcutta High Court would be more convenient for the family. The Supreme Court granted permission for the High Court to proceed with the hearing. The parents have alleged lapses in the ongoing investigation and have reiterated their demand for a CBI probe into the case. The petitioners have also highlighted concerns regarding the progress of the investigation and the lack of clarity in the findings so far.
With the Supreme Court’s approval, the case is now set for a hearing in the Calcutta High Court on Monday. Justice Tirthankar Ghosh will preside over the proceedings, where the family is expected to push for a more detailed probe. The demand for a CBI investigation has been a key point of contention, as the case continues to draw legal and public attention.
