Indian envoy discusses ties with newly sworn-in US counterpart Eric Garcetti
West Bengal CM and Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday, leaves for a North Bengal tour. She will be visiting the northern Bengal districts where CM Mamata will be attending administrative meetings as well as other welfare programs. The Bengal CM is also scheduled to visit poll-bound Meghalaya from there.
Over the past few months, the Trinamool party has trained its eyes on Meghalaya after a number of prominent political faces of Congress, including former chief minister Mukul Sangma, joined the party making it the main Opposition party in the state.
Recently, Trinamool released the first list of 52 candidates, including five women, for Assembly elections in Meghalaya, which has 60 seats. Polls are likely in February.
Mamata’s visit to Alipurduar — a Bengal district with no Trinamool MP or MLA — is also important as the rural elections are ahead.
