The budget session of the Bengal Legislative Assembly has been marked by controversy. During the budget discussion on Friday, BJP MLA Mihir Goswami criticized the budget and questioned the absence of a cabinet minister for the finance department in a state as large as Bengal. He also referred to Chandrima Bhattacharya, the Minister of State for Finance, who presented the budget, as a "half minister."
This remark angered members of the ruling Trinamool Congress and Chandrima herself, who retaliated by calling Goswami "amanush" (inhuman) while responding to the budget discussion. The BJP strongly objected to this characterization and MLA Agnimitra Pal filed a notice of breach of privilege against Chandrima.
During the incident, BJP MLAs also disrupted the proceedings of the House, with Shankar Ghosh calling for the removal of the minister's comments from the records. In a subsequent conversation with reporters, Goswami clarified that he had referred to Chandrima as a Minister of State not out of disrespect, but because he was questioning the absence of a cabinet minister for the finance department in the state.
