There has been a recent surge in fatalities caused by adenovirus in West Bengal, particularly in South Bengal. A 1.5-year-old child from Kalyani, Nadia, was recently admitted to the hospital due to cold and fever, along with breathing difficulties. Despite being transferred to the National Medical College in Kolkata, the child's condition did not improve, and he eventually passed away at the Mother and Child Center.
The increasing outbreak of adenovirus has raised concerns, prompting the state health department to issue a directory and guidelines for hospitals. Multiple cases of adenovirus infections have been reported across the state, with a 9-month-old child from Udayanarayanpur in Howrah also reported dead due to the virus. Symptoms of the virus include fever, cold, and shortness of breath, which can lead to respiratory problems, especially in children.
Experts claim that this virus is a type of coronavirus, and patients are being admitted to hospitals due to the severity of their symptoms. Pediatric departments are reportedly overwhelmed with sick children, with many hospitals experiencing a shortage of ventilators and cough medicines.
City officials in Kolkata are taking precautions to prevent the spread of adenovirus. Guidelines have been provided to doctors and nurses regarding patient care, with an emphasis on closely monitoring the physical condition of children with adenovirus symptoms. Parents are also being educated on how to care for their children at home and when to seek medical attention.
