WB Govt Program has resulted in more than 10 lakh Cataract Operations: Mamata

  • Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that 1 million cataract surgeries have been done under the state government's 'Chokher Alo' project

Citing the success of a project on social media site Twitter on Saturday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that 1 million cataract surgeries have been done under the state government's 'Chokher Alo' project. The state launched this scheme in 2021 for eye treatment and prevention of blindness. The Chief Minister said that within two years of its launch, there has been a good response. 

The Chief Minister wrote, "I am elated to share that we've crossed 10 Lakh cataract surgeries & provided 15 Lakh free spectacles to school children & adults (45+), since its launch."  Mamta wrote on Twitter that the success of the project is a great achievement.

'Chokher Alo' was launched in 2021 with the aim of eradicating vision impairment among the people of WB.

In 2021, the Chief Minister announced the “Chokher Alo” project. All the people of the state can get free eye treatment under this scheme. In this context, at that time Mamata had said, “I am starting a project called Chokher Alo. This project will provide free cataract surgery to 20 lakh elderly people over the next five years. We will also provide free spectacles as needed.” She further said that it's aim is to provide healthy eyes to all by 2025.
