Thieves rob UP jewellery shop by digging 10-foot tunnel through drain

Thieves stole jewellery worth lakhs of rupees from a shop in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh by digging a 10-feet long tunnel through a drain.

When the jewellery store owner arrived at the store to open it Tuesday morning, he noticed a tunnel running through the drain and into the store. According to police, the thieves removed bricks and mud from the weak edge of the drain to gain access to the store.

According to the police, the thieves got away with jewellery worth lakhs of rupees, the exact amount is yet to be ascertained.

As the news of the sensational robbery spread, members of the Meerut Bullion Traders Association reached the showroom to protest against law and order in the city. Shopkeepers claimed that this was the fourth such case of robbery in the city.

Shortly after the commotion, two police officers arrived at the showroom. The shopkeepers refused to let the police into the store and demanded the presence of a senior official to investigate this robbery and several others that have allegedly taken place in recent weeks.

An investigation is underway to nab the robbers, police said.
