Government to launch Rs 75 coin to commemorate opening of new Parliament

The government is all set to launch a special coin of Rs 75 denomination to commemorate the opening of the new Parliament building on Sunday, the finance ministry said. Apart from marking the opening of the new Parliament building, the coin will also celebrate 75 years of India's independence.

Describing the design of the coin, the ministry said that one side of the coin will feature the lion capital of the Ashoka pillar, with "Satyameva Jayate" written underneath. The word "Bharat" will be on the left side of the coin, written in Devanagri script and the word "India" on the right side in English.

Below the lion capital will be written the rupee symbol along with the denomination 75. The number 75 will be in international numerals. The other side of the coin will feature a picture of the Parliament building.

The words 'Sansad Sankul' in Devanagri script and 'Parliament Complex' in English will adorn this side of the coin. The diameter of the coin will be 44 millimeters and it will have a circular shape. The 35 gram coin will be made of 50 percent silver, 40 percent copper, 5 percent nickel and 5 percent zinc.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the new Parliament building on Sunday, May 28. The government sent out invitations to all opposition parties to attend the inauguration event. Many opposition leaders said they would boycott the function. Some major political parties not participating in the inauguration of the Parliament complex include Congress, Trinamool Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Samajwadi Party among others.

The opposition is protesting the inauguration of the new parliament by Prime Minister Modi. They want President Draupadi Murmu to inaugurate the new building.

According to reports, the inauguration of Parliament will be in two phases. Citing sources, the agency said the rituals will begin in the morning in a tent near the Gandhi statue in Parliament. Prime Minister Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Rajya Sabha Deputy Speaker Hariwansh and some senior government ministers are likely to attend this ceremony. A prayer ceremony will also be held at the new parliament complex, sources said.
