College security guard held over Kolkata student's alleged gang-rape case; 4th arrest so far
In a concerning development, Lucknow District Jail has reported that 63 inmates have tested positive for HIV, with at least 36 cases emerging during health tests conducted in December 2023. The jail authorities attribute the delayed testing to the unavailability of HIV testing kits since September.
According to officials, the majority of the infected inmates have a history of drug addiction, suggesting exposure to the virus through the use of contaminated syringes outside the prison. The administration, however, asserts that no prisoner has contracted HIV within the jail premises. All HIV-positive inmates are currently receiving regular treatment at a Lucknow hospital, with the jail administration closely monitoring their health.
