Two hybrid terrorists linked to the proscribed terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) surrendered in the Baskuchan area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Wednesday. The surrender took place during a joint cordon-and-search operation (CASO) carried out by the Special Operations Group (SOG) Shopian, 44 Rashtriya Rifles, and 178 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
The terrorists have been identified as Irfan Bashir and Uzair Salam. According to Jammu and Kashmir Police, the operation was launched based on specific intelligence input, and both individuals surrendered after being cornered during the search operation. The area, including a nearby orchard, was cordoned off by the forces prior to the surrender.
Security personnel recovered a range of items from the two individuals, including two AK-56 rifles, four magazines, 102 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition, two hand grenades, two pouches, ₹5,400 in cash, one mobile phone, one smartwatch, two packets of biscuits, and an Aadhaar card.
An FIR has been registered in connection with the case. Authorities are conducting further investigation to verify the background, possible handlers, and the extent of involvement of the two individuals in terrorist activities. The police have not yet disclosed any details regarding prior cases or specific operations linked to the duo.
This surrender follows a recent series of intensified counter-terror operations across Jammu and Kashmir. On May 16, six terrorists were neutralised in separate operations at Kelar in Shopian and Tral, involving the Army, J&K Police, and CRPF. Security forces have increased search operations in the region following a rise in terror-related incidents.
