A landslide struck the Yamunotri walking route at Nau Kanchi in Uttarkashi district on Monday, resulting in one injury and sparking fears that two other individuals may be trapped under the debris. The incident occurred on the pilgrimage path leading to the revered Yamunotri Dham.
Garhwal Divisional Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey confirmed the incident, stating, "One person has been injured in the landslide incident on the Yamunotri walking route. Two people are feared to be trapped under the debris. Rescue work is going on at the spot." The injured individual, identified as a resident of Mumbai, has been admitted to the Jankichatti Primary Health Center for treatment.
Following the landslide, local authorities immediately launched a comprehensive rescue operation to locate and extricate those feared trapped. Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya confirmed that personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, and district administration are actively engaged in relief efforts at the site.
The Yamunotri route, part of the Char Dham pilgrimage, is known for its challenging terrain. Landslides are a recurring concern in the Himalayan region, especially during the monsoon season. Authorities are working swiftly to clear the debris and ensure the safety of other pilgrims on the route.
