In support of the upcoming July 21 Martyrs’ Day rally, a gathering was held in front of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) headquarters. The event was organised by Ward 46 Councillor Priyanka Saha and was attended by Deputy Mayor and MLA Atin Ghosh, Chowringhee MLA Nayana Bandyopadhyay, and local Trinamool Congress workers and supporters.
During his speech, Atin Ghosh recalled the events of July 21, 1993, when Mamata Banerjee, then a Congress leader, led a protest demanding photo identity cards for voters. He stated that a meeting was held at Nizam Palace before the protest, where Youth Congress workers had resolved to conduct a peaceful demonstration, inspired by the principles of satyagraha. Ghosh alleged that police forces at the time responded with lathi-charge and firing, and said, “That day, I suffered a serious head injury and resolved to uproot the CPI(M)-led government.”
The gathering was part of the party’s ongoing preparations for the July 21 rally, which commemorates the deaths of 13 Youth Congress workers during the 1993 protest. The event focused on mobilising support and highlighting the historical context of the annual observance.
