Heavy rain batters Kolkata and South Bengal as low-pressure system deepens in Bay of Bengal

A fresh spell of intense rainfall has gripped Kolkata and several South Bengal districts since early Friday morning, caused by a new low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. The system, a remnant of Typhoon Vefa, has turned into a cyclonic circulation, triggering widespread rain and waterlogging across the city.

According to the Meteorological Department, this deepening system is expected to persist through the weekend, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall across affected regions until Tuesday. Rain has been continuous in Kolkata since late Thursday night, and major roads across the city were waterlogged by Friday morning.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has deployed drainage teams in affected areas to ensure quick water clearance, while disaster management units remain on standby. Areas like Behala, Tollygunge, and parts of central Kolkata reported severe water accumulation and traffic disruption.

The weather office has issued high-alert warnings for Saturday and Sunday, especially in coastal and low-lying districts. Farmers and fishermen have been advised to exercise caution, with warnings against venturing into the sea. The administration continues to monitor the evolving system closely.
