Heavy rainfall in the hills of Sikkim over the past two days has led to a rise in the Teesta River's water level, causing flooding in several areas of Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal. The worst-affected regions fall under the Chengmari Gram Panchayat of Kranti Block, including Sahebbari, Purba Dalaigaon, and Paschim Dalaigaon, where water entered homes and submerged land.
Around 500 residents from 80 families in these villages are currently living in temporary tents on the Teesta embankment. These families had vacated their homes nearly three months ago, well before the monsoon began, and shifted to the embankment for a six-month period as a precautionary measure. Floodwaters entered the villages following the rainfall in Sikkim, leading to large-scale waterlogging.
Though the water level has now reduced, several areas remain submerged up to waist height. In many parts, movement is only possible using boats or banana-tree rafts. Water has not yet fully drained from the localities, making it difficult for residents to return to their homes.
