INTUC Seva Dal organised a march in Kolkata on the eve of Raksha Bandhan under the banner of “Abhaya Rakhi Bandhan,” focusing on women’s safety and justice for Abhaya. The event started from Baubazar Crossing at 212 Bipin Bihari Ganguly Street and continued through College Street to the Emergency Gate of Medical College Hospital. Participants tied rakhis as symbols of protection and unity, marking the occasion ahead of Rakhi Purnima.
Organisers stated that the event was held a day early so that women could wear the “Abhaya Rakhi” while participating in “Abhaya Diwas” on August 9. They said the initiative was aimed at drawing attention to the fact that one year has passed, yet justice has not been delivered in the Abhaya case. The march was used to convey that women in the state still do not feel safe.
They added that incidents of atrocities and rapes against women continue in the state despite it being led by a woman Chief Minister. “We want everyone to take a pledge that the struggle for justice and against injustice will continue,” the organisers said.
