From September 1, two-wheeler riders in Uttar Pradesh will not be able to buy petrol without wearing helmets. The state government is launching a month-long ‘No Helmet, No Fuel’ campaign, which will continue till September 30.
The drive will be supervised by district magistrates and coordinated through the District Road Safety Committees, with enforcement by police, administration, and transport officials. Petrol pump operators across the state, along with major oil marketing companies, have been asked to cooperate in implementing the directive.
The initiative is backed by Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which makes helmets mandatory for both drivers and pillion riders. Section 194D also provides penalties for violations. The Supreme Court’s Road Safety Committee has urged states to prioritize helmet compliance to reduce road fatalities.
Transport Commissioner Brajesh Narayan Singh clarified that the campaign is not punitive but a pledge towards safety. “No helmet, no fuel is not a punishment, but a pledge of safety. Wearing a helmet is the simplest insurance of life,” he said, urging citizens and petrol pump operators to cooperate fully.
