On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, a padyatra was organized in Kolkata under the leadership of INTUC Seva Dal President Pramod Pandey. The march began by paying floral tributes to the statue of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar in front of Kolkata University.
From there, the padyatra proceeded symbolically “as if under Vidyasagar’s leadership,” passing through landmarks closely tied to his memory, including Hare School, Hindu School, and Sanskrit College. The journey concluded at Sanskrit Collegiate School on Bankim Chatterjee Street.
Organizers said the march was not just a tribute to Vidyasagar, but also an attempt to raise awareness about what they called the growing “privatization of education” in the country. The participants alleged that Bengal too was facing the “theft of education,” which they described as a threat to equal opportunities for students.
The padyatra highlighted Vidyasagar’s lifelong fight for accessible education and sought to connect his vision to present-day concerns about the state of the education system.
