13-year-old boy in UP dies by suicide after losing father’s ₹14 lakh savings in online gaming

A 13-year-old boy from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, died by suicide on Monday after reportedly losing his father’s savings of ₹14 lakh in online gaming. The boy, a Class 6 student, had spent the money deposited in his father’s account, which was meant to secure the family’s future after the sale of a plot of land.

Police said the matter came to light when the father, a painter by profession, found his account empty and lodged a complaint with the bank. After returning home and narrating the matter to his family, the boy panicked, went to his room under the pretext of studying, and was later found hanging by his sister. He was rushed to a community health centre but was declared dead by doctors.

The boy’s death has reignited concerns over the dangers of online gaming addiction among minors. In recent years, multiple cases of teenage suicides linked to such platforms have emerged, prompting Parliament to pass a law banning online money games with penalties including heavy fines and imprisonment.
