Ballygunge man dies mysteriously; Wife claims suicide, sister alleges murder

A pall of gloom and suspicion has descended upon the Padmapukur area of Kolkata following the mysterious death of a young man, identified as Biki Mallick, on Dashami night. While Biki's wife, Priyanka Mallick, initially claimed her husband died by hanging, his sister has vehemently rejected the suicide narrative, filing a formal complaint alleging murder. The sister claims that the death is a direct consequence of an alleged extramarital affair involving Priyanka and another man, a claim that has sent shockwaves through the Ballygunge neighbourhood.

Biki Mallick had been residing with his wife in a house situated on Padmapukur Road in Ballygunge. The tragic news reached his sister, Sona Mahato, late on Thursday night, informing her that her brother had "committed suicide" by hanging himself. Upon rushing to the address, Sona Mahato found her brother's body already taken down inside the room. The circumstances surrounding the discovery immediately raised her suspicions, prompting her to contact the authorities.

Ballygunge Police arrived at the scene shortly after receiving the alert and retrieved the body. The deceased was subsequently sent for a post-mortem examination, the results of which are awaited and expected to be crucial in determining the actual cause of death. Following the police's initial action, Sona Mahato formally lodged a written complaint with the police station, explicitly accusing her brother’s wife and her alleged partner of murder.

The core of the allegation centres on an alleged affair between Priyanka and a local youth. According to the sister's complaint, Biki had discovered the illicit relationship, leading to severe and frequent domestic disputes between the couple. It is further alleged that Priyanka refused to end the relationship despite the escalating tensions at home.

The situation reportedly reached a critical point on the night of the incident when Biki returned home and allegedly found his wife in a compromising situation with the said youth. A fierce argument is believed to have erupted immediately. The sister’s murder complaint posits that, following this major altercation, Priyanka and her alleged paramour killed Biki and subsequently staged the scene to make it appear as a suicide.

The police have registered the case based on Sona Mahato’s written complaint and have launched a thorough investigation into the matter. Detectives are currently examining all angles, including the suicide claim by the wife and the murder allegation by the sister, while they await the forensic and post-mortem reports. The case has generated immense sensation in the locality, with neighbours speculating on the tragic turn of events.
