UK PM Starmer pledges all British Universities to open campuses in India

During his high-profile official visit to Mumbai, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer made a landmark announcement, stating that all British universities will be establishing campuses in India. This ambitious initiative represents a significant step forward in educational collaboration between the two nations, forming a key pillar in a broader strategy designed to fundamentally strengthen bilateral ties. The announcement underscores a commitment to fostering a deeper academic and economic partnership, promising substantial benefits for students, professionals, and the higher education sectors in both countries.

The Prime Minister’s announcement followed productive discussions with a delegation of 125 of the United Kingdom’s top industry leaders, whom he brought to India to discuss trade and business opportunities. The leaders held a joint press conference at Raj Bhawan in Mumbai, where the UK Labour Party leader emphasized the strategic importance of aligning education policy with economic goals under the newly signed trade agreement.

Crucially, Prime Minister Starmer used the platform to clarify the UK's position on immigration and mobility, specifically addressing the subject of visa policies. He firmly stated that Britain is not currently seeking a new visa deal with India, preferring instead to focus on maximizing the benefits of existing bilateral arrangements and the recent economic agreement.

Starmer reiterated that the primary objective of his visit and the broader strategic focus is to leverage the free trade agreement (FTA), which was formally signed in July and is slated to come into effect next year. When asked directly about visa negotiations, Starmer was unequivocal, stating, "That isn't part of the plans," thereby steering the focus back to capital investment and academic exchange.

The decision for British universities to establish a presence in India is perfectly aligned with the comprehensive goals of the UK-India Free Trade Agreement. By encouraging greater collaboration in research, innovation, and academic exchange, this move is expected to significantly deepen economic and educational ties, providing a direct pathway for Indian students to access world-class education within their home country.
