With Chhath Puja just around the corner, the sale of bamboo products has started in full swing across Jalpaiguri’s markets. Items like axes, baskets, dauras, and flutes are being sold at the Municipal Market, Shialpara, and other local hubs. However, traders say the festive cheer has been dampened by the sharp rise in bamboo prices this year.
According to sellers, the cost of raw bamboo has increased significantly, driving up production expenses and cutting into profits. Despite the initial slowdown, bamboo artisans are busy preparing products for the upcoming rush, hoping that business will peak on Monday and Tuesday as devotees begin their final shopping rounds.
What was once a festival celebrated mainly by the Hindi-speaking community has now become a symbol of unity and devotion across Bengal. This growing participation has encouraged bamboo artisans to keep up with the demand despite financial challenges.
Traders say while sales were slow on the first day, they remain optimistic that the next 24 hours will bring a surge of customers preparing for Chhath rituals.
