The Maa Flyover, one of Kolkata’s most vital traffic arteries, is now witnessing over 1 lakh vehicles daily—more than double its original target of 40,000 when it opened in 2015. According to the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), the growing traffic volume has pushed up the flyover’s maintenance costs by nearly 30%. Despite the rising load, the flyover continues to maintain its structural strength and visual appeal.
During peak hours, around 15,000 vehicles pass on both sides of the flyover every hour, and sometimes even more. Officials say that while heavy vehicles remain banned, regular traffic has increased by around 20% over the past few years. KMDA has attributed the flyover’s well-maintained condition to regular inspections and adherence to modern traffic management systems.
Engineers and experts are being consulted to ensure that the structure remains safe and durable for decades to come. A senior KMDA official said, “We are taking expert advice to ensure the flyover’s strength and shine remain intact for many years.” The Maa Flyover, built in phases between 2015 and 2019, has become a crucial link connecting eastern Kolkata with Park Circus and central areas.
