A tragic incident cast a shadow of grief over Howrah on the evening of Chhath Puja. A three-year-old girl lost her life in a tragic road accident while returning home with her family after her mother had observed the Chhath fast and offered prayers for her daughter’s long life at the Ganga Ghat.
The incident took place near the Burn Standard intersection in Howrah. According to witnesses, Poonam Kumari, a resident of the Howrah Railway Quarters, was returning from the riverbank in a rickshaw van when her daughter accidentally fell off. In a split second, a pickup van coming from behind ran over the child.
The severely injured girl was rushed to Howrah Hospital, but doctors declared her dead upon arrival. The festive joy of Chhath Puja turned into mourning as shock and grief spread across the Railway Quarters. Locals gathered to console the family, who had earlier been celebrating the festival with faith and devotion.
