Muzaffarpur hospital blaze kills 3 patients, leaves 20 injured
Former Cabinet Minister and suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Partha Chatterjee, immediately upon his return home after being released from jail, expressed his strong desire to return to active political work. Following his release, there is now widespread speculation that the veteran politician is keen to attend the upcoming Winter Session of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
However, the path to the Assembly session is complicated by a significant logistical and political hurdle: where will he be seated? Although Partha Chatterjee won his seat on a TMC ticket, the party itself has issued a suspension against him. This suspension means he will not be allowed to occupy his customary seat among the ruling party's ranks.
Inside the Assembly chamber, the seating arrangement follows a strict political hierarchy. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other Cabinet Ministers occupy the seats to the Speaker’s right. Other ruling party MLAs sit in a circular arrangement around them. Conversely, the Opposition BJP MLAs sit on the Speaker’s left.
The only MLA who currently sits between the TMC and BJP blocs is Nawsad Siddique, the solitary representative of the Indian Secular Front (ISF). As suspended TMC MLA Partha Chatterjee prepares to return, extensive deliberation has begun on where he will be accommodated in the House.
Officially, no representative from the ruling party has commented on the matter. This silence is largely attributed to the fact that the party has suspended Partha Chatterjee for six years, effectively isolating him from the 'TMC family' for now. Consequently, political observers believe that the five-time MLA for Behala West will likely be allotted a seat adjacent to Naushad Siddiqui's position.
Meanwhile, Partha Chatterjee is focused on regaining the trust of the residents of Behala West. He is determined to make an active return to politics, stating, "I am committed to the people of Behala." He has indicated multiple times his intention to visit his constituency and has also penned an open letter to the local residents. In that letter, he asked constituents to provide proof if anyone took money from them in exchange for a job using his name. He challenged, "If anyone's money has been taken, provide the proof." Partha Chatterjee was arrested in 2022 in connection with the recruitment scam and returned home on Tuesday after approximately three and a half years.
