Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra passed away on Monday at the age of 89, marking the end of a six-decade career that shaped mainstream Hindi cinema. His family, including Hema Malini and Esha Deol, was seen at a Mumbai crematorium as the industry gathered to bid farewell. The actor had recently returned home after a brief health scare.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute, calling Dharmendra’s death “the end of an era” and remembering him as an iconic performer whose diverse roles resonated with generations. Modi noted his simplicity and warmth, expressing condolences to the actor’s family, friends and fans.
Tributes poured in from across Bollywood. Filmmaker Karan Johar described him as a “bonafide legend” and the embodiment of a mainstream cinema hero. Several actors, including Kareena Kapoor and Kiara Advani, shared emotional posts, while Madhur Bhandarkar recalled Dharmendra’s humour and generosity.
Dharmendra’s career spanned 64 years, delivering 75 hits—more than any other Hindi film hero as a lead actor. From Haqeeqat and Sholay to Chupke Chupke and Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani, he successfully transitioned from romantic leads to action heroes and later to character roles. His last rites were performed at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Mumbai.
