Eastern Railway announces new time-table for trains from Howrah-Sealdah; Extends several routes

Eastern Railway has announced a comprehensive revision of its train timetable for the Sealdah and Howrah divisions, effective from January 1, 2026. The primary objective behind this new schedule is to ensure punctuality and improve the overall efficiency of rail operations. Railway authorities believe that by optimizing travel times and rectifying existing delays, they will be able to introduce more trains in the future to meet the growing commuter demand.

A major highlight of the new timetable is the extension of several local train routes to benefit suburban passengers. Six pairs of Howrah–Arambagh locals and two pairs of Howrah–Tarakeswar locals will now run up to Goghat. Additionally, a Sealdah–Ranaghat local has been extended to Shantipur, while the B.B.D. Bagh–Barrackpore and Barrackpore–Sealdah locals will now terminate at Kalyani. For long-distance commuters, two Bardhaman–Tinpahar MEMU trains have seen their journeys extended up to Sahibganj.

The update also includes changes in the frequency of specific suburban services. The Hasnabad–Barasat locals, which previously operated six days a week, will now run daily to accommodate regular office-goers. Conversely, certain Sealdah–Barrackpore and B.B.D. Bagh–Barrackpore services have been scaled back from daily operations to six days a week. These adjustments are based on a detailed analysis of passenger footfall and operational requirements across different sections.

In total, the Eastern Railway has revised the timings for 45 Mail and Express trains and 203 EMU, MEMU, and Passenger trains. Passengers are advised to check the updated "Trains at a Glance" or the official railway app before planning their New Year travels. The authorities are optimistic that these structural changes will significantly reduce congestion at major terminals like Howrah and Sealdah, providing a smoother commuting experience for millions.
