EC seeks Bengal DGP report by Jan 6 over attacks on roll observer’s convoy

The Election Commission has taken serious note of repeated protests and attacks targeting its Special Observer and Electoral Roll Observer appointed under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), C. Murugan, in West Bengal. In response, the Commission has sought a detailed report from the state’s Director General of Police, issuing a strongly worded letter over the incidents.

According to the Commission, Murugan was first targeted during a protest in Kulpi and later faced a similar incident in Magrahat. Protesters allegedly surrounded his vehicle, climbed onto it, and engaged in pushing and slapping. The driver-side lock and window of the vehicle were damaged during the disturbance, raising concerns over the safety of election officials on duty.

Following these developments, the Commission on Saturday directed the state police to submit a comprehensive report on the matter. The report has been sought by 5 pm on January 6, with the Commission stressing accountability and security during the ongoing electoral roll revision process.
