Outram Ghat echoes split voices as sadhus weigh welfare work versus Sanatan identity | Watch Taaza TV's Report

A historic crowd gathered at Kolkata’s Outram Ghat as devotees poured in for the annual Gangasagar pilgrimage, turning the riverfront into a sea of humanity. From the early hours, the ghat remained packed, with little space left for movement as pilgrims began their sacred journey to the confluence of the Ganga and the sea.

Alongside the devotees, large groups of sadhus, ascetics, Naga babas and vairagis set up camps near Ramayan Babu Ghat. The area resonated with chants, hymns and ritual prayers, creating an atmosphere charged with devotion and spiritual energy.

Amid the religious fervour, political discussions emerged as a parallel undercurrent. With the Assembly elections approaching, sadhus and saints were seen engaging in intense debates over governance and public welfare. Some ascetics noted that state-backed arrangements for pilgrims and the poor reflected administrative commitment, influencing public sentiment.

Others, however, stressed the need for a change in power, invoking Sanatan Dharma and cultural identity. According to them, safeguarding tradition, faith and religious values requires political transformation, making the ghat a rare space where spirituality and electoral discourse intersected.

Given the unprecedented rush, the administration remained on high alert. Police personnel, disaster management teams and volunteers were deployed across the ghat, boat services were increased, and pilgrims were urged to maintain discipline to ensure a safe and smooth journey. The Gangasagar Mela once again emerged as both a spiritual gathering and a reflection of Bengal’s public mood.
