"Smaller parties shouldn't be prioritized": Sudip Bandyopadhyay hits at TMC
The Bharatiya Janata Party has delivered a sweeping victory in the 2026 municipal corporation elections, winning 1,425 of 2,869 seats across 29 civic bodies in Maharashtra. The results mark a decisive shift in the state’s local political landscape, with the BJP emerging as the single-largest party overall.
The most significant outcome came in Mumbai, where the BJP wrested control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation from the Shiv Sena (UBT), ending the Thackeray family’s three-decade dominance over the cash-rich civic body. In the 227-member BMC, the BJP won 89 seats, while ally Shiv Sena secured 29.
Shiv Sena (UBT) managed 65 seats in Mumbai, while the Congress, contesting in alliance with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, won 24. Other parties included AIMIM with eight seats, NCP with three, Samajwadi Party with two and NCP (SP) with one seat.
In Pune, the BJP stunned the Pawar-led parties by winning 119 seats, far ahead of the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, which secured 27 seats. The NCP (SP) managed three seats, while the Congress won 15 in the city’s civic body.
The BJP also consolidated its dominance in Nagpur by winning 102 of the 151 seats, leaving the Congress with 34. In Nashik, the saffron party secured 72 seats, followed by Shiv Sena with 26, Shiv Sena (UBT) with 15, Congress with three and NCP with four.
The party’s winning streak continued in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where it won 57 seats. As per the final tally, Shiv Sena secured 399 seats statewide, Congress 324, NCP 167, Shiv Sena (UBT) 155, and other parties and independents shared the remaining seats, reports said.
