Amid mounting complaints over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, the Pradesh Congress on Tuesday staged a protest by gheraoing the office of the Chief Electoral Officer. The agitation was led by Pradesh Congress President Shubhankar Sarkar and witnessed participation from a large number of party workers and supporters. Congress leaders alleged that serious irregularities were occurring during the revision of electoral rolls, leading to harassment of ordinary voters.
As the protest intensified, police deployed at the spot erected barricades to prevent the demonstrators from moving forward. Tension escalated when protesters attempted to breach the barricades, prompting police to detain several party workers to maintain law and order. The action led to brief chaos at the site before the situation was brought under control.
Addressing the protest, Shubhankar Sarkar said the Congress would continue its agitation until transparency is ensured in the SIR process and grievances of common voters are resolved. He reiterated that the party would not back down from raising the issue until corrective measures are taken, reports said.
