Chief Ministers of Punjab and Haryana on Tuesday held a meeting in Chandigarh to discuss the long-pending Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue, following directions from the Supreme Court. The talks, attended by senior ministers and officials from both states, were described as cordial but ended without a concrete resolution, with further discussions delegated to officials.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann addressed a joint press conference after the meeting, stating that dialogue in a positive environment was essential for meaningful outcomes. Saini said constructive discussions could pave the way for solutions, while Mann termed the SYL dispute an old issue that has remained unresolved for decades.
Mann emphasised that water scarcity is emerging as a global concern and stressed the need for water conservation measures alongside efforts to resolve inter-state disputes. He reiterated that Haryana and Punjab share fraternal ties and that both governments are committed to finding a solution without infringing on each other’s rights.
Officials from both states will continue deliberations on the issue, as the political leadership seeks common ground. The SYL canal dispute, involving the sharing of Ravi and Beas river waters, remains one of the most complex inter-state water disputes in the country.
