Kolkata police arrests 12 students for cheating in Madhyamik using AI

A new and alarming cheating trend has emerged in the ongoing secondary examinations, with artificial intelligence being used by students inside examination centres. Traditional methods such as micro-xeroxed notes, paper slips or coded markings on hands appear to have faded, replaced by smartphone-based technology.

On Saturday, during the secondary geography examination, twelve students were caught across different schools for secretly bringing mobile phones into the examination halls. After receiving the question papers, the students allegedly attempted to search for answers using their devices. According to available information, eleven of the twelve students were using artificial intelligence applications to obtain answers, marking a significant shift in examination malpractice. The misuse of AI reflects the increasing dependence of Gen Z students on smartphones and digital tools.

The incident has raised serious concerns among examination authorities regarding the effectiveness of existing monitoring systems. Officials are now facing fresh challenges in safeguarding the integrity of examinations in an era of rapidly advancing technology.
